we. are not going to. try to. come in here. lead guitarist of rage against the machine. and the stage for political change pumping up the crowd as downtown los angeles became the new front in the fight to keep the american dream alive. as far as the eye could see people lined up in solidarity to let washington and wall street know that america's poor and middle class will no longer be the scapegoats for the nation's money problems. steelworkers or cops students it was these.
8:19 pm
were. the first the poor and middle class is manifesting itself throughout the west coast and in many other cities across america with federal and local governments proposing major budget cuts and private industry still hiring at a sluggish rate the pain is hitting home for many. is fighting to keep kids off the streets while at the same time fighting to keep food on his table. in the last six months. to help people plus assess. certainly the stay in the field like many here he believes. government
8:20 pm
solutions so far have only slung the nation backwards expanding any trenching poverty a recent study shows that nearly two million people in los angeles county are living in hunger i can go couple days without food i shall not go a day without food and fuel and do anything to get feed the kids to get the kids the house the shelter they need and supported me i mean it's dangerous those concerns are shared by workers who fear their wages and benefits are at risk by the right wing movement to kill organized labor kelly pierce was encouraged by people taking to the streets she depends on her benefits to pay for her daughter's heart surgeries so she will fight for her benefits and for those of others i mean look at all the bad things here on the street corners you know the country yet you see more and more and more. just now it's only the vets it's us standing on street corners asking for money and that's wrong it appears that main street is finally waking up
8:21 pm
a solidarity movement developing ready to fight for a fair system it's global i mean you see it's about the piece of history people in the streets in cairo in madison in los angeles i think it's a real international groundswell of people standing up against injustice history is not made by presidents or popes or. running when you move. your hands. in los angeles. r.t. . so is america finally waking up or are these protests just a small blip on the already crowded radar screen earlier i spoke to george hamon sure who is a founder of survive and thrive to me. well i think we're headed to a point especially in los angeles we've been ranked the highest county for hunger because of our high real estate prices utility prices and now gasoline
8:22 pm
surging towards five dollars a gallon what else is going to happen people are in need they can offer you their children and they're losing their jobs of course they're going to try to take to the streets and i was shocked that so many people came out and i really think you're just going to see more and more protests and you could probably expect these protests to eventually become violent protests i mean hollywood there's shyne this sheen has come off of hollywood you have five hundred thousand people in l.a. county alone on welfare you have a huge amount of people on food stamps. or disability some type of welfare program for the government that is the underpinnings of our economy right now it's not easy it's not manufacturing it's not high tech it's welfare and food stamps so there's a couple things happening but people are starting to see with a rising gas prices and after they make the rent payments after they made their utility payments you know. johnny is asking for more food can i have
8:23 pm
you know can i have that hamburger no son i don't have the money to go get you a hamburger and that's what's happening right now is is literally parents are come to the realization that they don't have the money to buy food for their children just go to the grocery store i mean it's incredible the price increases that we're seeing in that we supposedly don't have inflation will tell that the people on a fixed income or tell that to people that are relying on food stamps if you get six hundred dollars a month on food stamps what does it feel like when it's only worth three hundred dollars they don't care if your child is is is starving. they all they care about is money in their bank account and getting elected obama is. totally out of touch with the reality we need to recall troops across the world and we need to bring all that income that we're spending overseas directly to the american people i think we
8:24 pm
need to right now there's a poor ization up in america you know it's the left versus the right it's the g.o.p. versus the democrats i think we all need to come together and realize we have a serious problem and we need to start implementing policies that are pro-american pro-american people well you saw in the middle east is different things can happen you can have a few million people rise up and then the leaders are out of jail now or in some did in some cases they can rise up and they get shot down so what will happen to america when main street really rises up and really starts demonstrating is left to be seen i've not sure what our government is going to be doing but i can tell you a lot of my listeners on on my channel are very concerned that. the government may be preparing for some sort of martial law if that were to happen scary stuff martial law or a time in our founder of three five and right. now from states to average americans
8:25 pm
and seems that everyone is grown these days for unfortunately for the gray lady it looks like she's getting in the bread line along with the rest of us so what idea does the brilliant new york times come up with to stem their financial loss. eight ok well so let me recap you have a product that's been free on the web for pretty much ever fewer and fewer people are using that product in the age of t.v. twitter aggregating services blah blah blah we are in one of the biggest recessions this country's ever seen and have less money to spend in general and what does the new york times come up with to save itself making people pay for the product that they've been getting for free i don't know about that but anyhow i earlier i spoke with georgetown university professor and author of the blog naturals revenge quest for chambers here's part of that conversation. there is some some credence to that because they think they figured they were going to be able to build some great wall of china i mean
8:26 pm
a great well china itself and kicking about the mongols that long but it is kind of a filter where there are some kind of lanes that you can go through where they kind of figure we'll see if we put these lanes in it people will try to jump over it and you can get through it through social media there is really look at it like coming through search engines like google as a way of kind of knocking that off but you know you plus you've got your twenty visits and how many people are going to you know going to go through you know me twenty minutes a month i mean the people who are really complaining about it are probably the hardcore web geeks who are going to complain about everything or students but you know like my students i mean they get to it free through the library they're not really complaining they don't think that the end result of this could be that fewer people are going to read the product that there are already well off the other side because it's going to be it's one more level of you know we're used to just getting our blackberry or i phone into doing it it's one more level of crap they have to
8:27 pm
leap over to get to their pets or their content it's not just news content it's cultural stuff new music movies and the whole deal but it was some political news international stuff you know yes and we want to get to that you know because because here's the thing i mean you have aggregation and you have t.v. you have other sources but i mean they are still the gray lady and is diminished and is and is beaten up as they are they still have bureaus around the world that are that are on the ground at least trying to compete with our he and other news another news outlets to to get the primary news material that has become you have to aggregate from something basically right i mean these are news papers is it supposed to be like the front lines of what's happening in the world if not a little bit embarrassing that the newspapers didn't really perceive the whole internet thing coming i mean well i don't. why that museums have treated their web site as some low rent hooker that you are a well that. well but you know maybe maybe maybe now they realize that the low rent
8:28 pm
hooker is really julia roberts and it. will be a different amount of her fashion. but i mean it is it was short sightedness and arrogance short sightedness and the stuff that they really do well such as the primary newsgathering diverting of information the analysis of information they thought they could just sit back on their laurels and they got screwed so now they're trying to come up with some kind of way to recoup that and be relevant it you know and i think that this is basically all they could do we think about it it's all they could do and put these purposeful kind of ways around it like through social media as a way to be relevant to social media and and to be relevant with linking because you know their articles are going to be linked as chris chambers professor at georgetown university and unfortunately that does it for now for more on the stories that we covered this got our check up com slash usa and check out our you tube page that come fresh arcam erica and as always feel free to follow me on
8:29 pm
twitter at least half an hour had a great night. you know sometimes you see a story. you think you understand it and then you live something else here's some other part of it and realize that everything you thought you knew you don't. start to see.
